Tourism and Date Nights?

Here’s an interesting article brought to our attention by CCA Past-President Maureen Crick Owen.  From the Wall Street Journal (Freelance Writer and contributor to the Journal Matthew Kronsberg), an article posing the question, “When Did Cemeteries Become Tourist Attractions and Hot Date Spots?”  Have a look at the article as we’re not sure how long the link will be live!

Many of our cemeteries, given their historic nature, are of significant interest to genealogists as well as for tourists in general. Grove Street Cemetery in New Haven has many important and influential “residents” within it’s gates, including Eli Whitney, Noah Webster and Charles Goodyear. Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford is the resting place of J.P. Morgan, Samuel Colt and Katharine Hepburn. Cypress Cemetery in Old Saybrook, the Palisado Cemetery in Windsor and the Ancient Burial Ground in Hartford go back to the earliest English settlements in Connecticut and include the resting sites of early Governors, religious leaders and other important colonial figures. There are many, many, MANY other important cemeteries in Connecticut beyond those included here.

But, hot date spots!?  Read on!

Have any of the CCA member cemeteries considered some of these newer “options” to bring folks to your cemeteries? We’d love to hear! And, we’d love to hear who’s buried in your cemeteries! Email Torrance Downes at jhtdownes@gmail.com with your thoughts and comments!
